This is John Basham the Great great grandfather of Mary Shipp.He was the grandson of George Basham a quaker of Haverhill Suffolk born in 1745.
John was born in 1813 the son of James Basham.John married in 1837 to Celina Farrant and had five children. Celina died in 1853; John then remarried on the 17/10/1853 to a Harriet Hall.

In the 1853 census he was described as a clothes broker, which became a successful Clothing and Boot business in the High Street,by the time he died. In 1890 it was reported that a fire caused considerable damage to the shop. He also served on the town council from 1878 to the time of his death in 1892 at Haverhill Suffolk.

He was still there in 1891 as a butcher & beer house. .A Mr .J.Bigmore as clerk to Risbridge Union applied for a order on Charles to contribute to the maintainence of his son Henry William an inmate ,to pay on account of his illness. The Halstead Times reported in 1892 Where it was the custom for Charles to open at 5.0.clock am during the summer,it being stated that some twenty years ago permission, was given by the magistrates for this to be done for convenience of the employees in Messrs Gurteen's factories, who went to work at 6.o.clock . 				"The Shipp family name starts here"Romance of Emma&Thomas Emma Marsh and Thomas Basham first child was Ernest George Basham.Bpt.21/8/1903. She then married a James Shipp 28/12/1903. This marriage was never consumated,as Thomas came back from the war and met her outside of the church,and went off together to live at 144 Burton End.Haverhill. Subsequently all further children were named Shipp.
